Overview
The BPMN Converter helps you migrate process content from the legacy BPMN editor to the BlueDolphin Processes module. It converts BPMN views created in the legacy editor into BPMN diagrams that you can review, correct, and save in Processes.
Important: Legacy BPMN diagrams and Processes diagrams exist independently and do not interact with each other. Diagrams created or converted in Processes are available only in Processes, while legacy BPMN diagrams remain in the legacy BPMN environment.
Although the legacy BPMN editor remains available and no final decommissioning date has been announced, we recommend planning and starting your migration early to ensure a smooth and controlled transition.
Why Convert Legacy BPMN Views?
It is recommended to convert legacy BPMN views when you want to:
Continue working with existing process content in the Processes module.
Reduce the need to maintain process content in two separate BPMN environments.
Take advantage of BPMN 2.0 validation checks.
Review and improve the diagram layout before saving the converted version.
Prepare important process diagrams for future use in Processes.
Migration also provides an opportunity to improve the quality and maintainability of your process landscape. You can remove outdated or duplicate content, review ownership, identify relevant metadata and questionnaires, and prioritize business-critical diagrams.
Roles
Any of the following roles can use the converter, provided the add-on is enabled for the tenant:
Process modelers
Process administrators
Administrators
NOTE: It is an add-on functionality. Contact your Account Manager or Growth Manager to enable the Converter feature.
Migration planning
Start with the right diagrams
Do not assume every legacy BPMN diagram needs to be migrated. Review the current process landscape and classify each diagram before conversion.
Migration Decision | Use When |
Migrate to Processes | The diagram is still relevant and requires ongoing maintenance. |
Update Before Migration | The content is valuable but requires cleanup before conversion. |
Archive | The diagram is useful for historical reference but should not become an active Processes diagram. |
Recreate in Processes | The legacy view is outdated or difficult to maintain, but the process remains relevant. |
Exclude | The diagram is obsolete, duplicated, or no longer has an owner. |
Recommended Prioritization
Prioritize diagrams that are:
Business-critical.
Frequently used.
Recently updated.
Published or shared with many users.
Linked to ongoing change initiatives, compliance activities, audits, or operational work.
Owned by active process owners.
Migration Approach
Scenario | Recommended Approach |
Few diagrams with clear ownership | Use the BPMN Converter as a self-service migration tool. |
Many diagrams, extensive legacy usage, or complex ownership | Contact your Account Manager or Growth Manager to discuss a structured migration approach. |
Important metadata, questionnaires, or governance information | Plan the migration carefully and validate all related information after conversion. |
Limited internal capacity | Discuss support options or alternative approaches before starting a large-scale migration. |
